The nation has come under serious international scrutiny for its lack of immigrant rights and safety regulations, which has led to the deaths of thousands of migrant workers. Stadium 974 has 40,000 seats takes its name from the number of shipping containers in the construction as well as Qatar’s international dialling code. Its construction used far fewer materials than a usual stadium, and many of them were brought to site in the very shipping containers that make up its structure.

Stadium 974 is targeting five star Global Sustainability Assessment System certification for its design and construction. Instead, the design allows for natural ventilation through the gaps in its structure, with breezes coming in due to its proximity to the sea. Unlike other stadia built for the Qatar World Cup, Stadium 974 does not have air conditioning. The design implements disused shipping containers, reflecting Qatar’s maritime history and the stadium’s proximity to Doha Port. It is the first “fully demountable” stadium in World Cup history, thanks to its modular steel creation. The stadium, formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud, was designed by Spanish architects Fenwick Iribarren, in partnership with German structural engineers Schlaich Bergermann Partner and English multidisciplinary engineering consultancy firm Hilson Moran.
